Blue is a must when you're drawing landscapes but it's also hard to obtain since it cannot be find naturally through soil and plants.

In history, blue was seen as royalty and rare. In ancient Egypt, they needed to seek a permanent blue pigment to depict their royalty and gods.

At that time, acquiring Azurite, the naturally occurred minerals, was impractical, as these minerals were rare and difficult to work. When Lapis Lazuli, a semiprecious stone mined in Afghanistan, was 1st introduced to Egypt became highly prized among the Egyptians.

Around 3100 BCE, the 1st synthetic blue was first produced by the ancient Egyptians when they were manufacturing for glazing pots. The new pigment was named as hsbd-iryt, which means artificial lapis lazuli, indicative of the ancients’ obsession with this precious stone.
