Описание к видео Mevagissey Cornwall | Cornwall's Most Photogenic Village?

Mevagissey Cornwall is one of the top attractions in Cornwall and is a village and port on the south coast of Cornwall. If you want to know what to do in Cornwall then this walking tour of Mevagissey will show you why the village is one of the great Cornwall days out.

The first recorded mention of Mevagissey dates from 1313 (when it was known as Porthhilly), although there is evidence of settlement dating back to the Bronze Age.

The village nestles in a small valley and faces east to Mevagissey Bay.

The name Mevagissey is derived from the names of two saints, St Meva and St Issey.

There are several hotels and many fish restaurants in Mevagissey and, of course, plenty of fish and chip shops!

There is an excellent Folk Museum, and an aquarium, in the old lifeboat house, displaying locally caught fish.

The harbour is built on the site of a medieval quay.

The first Act of Parliament allowing the new port to be built was passed in 1774.

The inner harbour, consisting of the current East and West Quays, was constructed from this time.

An outer harbour was added in 1888, but seriously damaged in a blizzard in 1891.

The outer walls were rebuilt by 1897.

Mevagissey lighthouse was built in 1896 to mark the south breakwater that protects the small harbour.

There are currently around 63 registered fishing vessels in Mevagissey harbour worked by 69 fishermen and it is the second biggest fishing port in Cornwall.

Each year at the end of June, Mevagissey celebrates Feast Week, a week of family fun, music, and floral dances through the streets.

At the end of the week there is a carnival and a fireworks display.

Mevagissey village centre consists of narrow streets with many places to eat and shops aimed at the tourist trade.

Mevagissey is home to three holy wells. The Brass Well and Lady's Well are both situated in the manor of Treleaven and the third is within the gardens of Mevagissey House.
