At last! I was hired to be in a commercial as a celebrity. Me and my Keep it in The Family wife, Pauline Yates, found ourselves together in Cape Town, South Africa - for a day-and-a-half shoot to immortalise a star lawnmower; Qualcast’s latest and finest.

It was seven days later!! that we were handed our plane tickets and told we were done. Delightful for us, but a monumental screw-up for the company. It was all a matter of money and lawn grass and corporate high jinks.

Sitcom is a hectic business… so this was the first time Pauline and I had proper chats – we cable-car-ed our way up Table Mountain, and so on. Magnificent views, and Pauline was always frank and revealing and funny. Married to Donald Churchill, you had to hang on to a sense of humour.
Our commercial was privileged to be voiced-over by John Arlott in his honeyed Hampshire burr – perhaps the most famous cricket commentator of all time. I hired a car and got to see South Africa.
