The ‘secret’ of this bassline is really using the rests in the maingroove. Listen for instance at bar 17-18 of the first Verse. It really makes a difference if you mind the rests in the first and second beat of these bars. But also the rests in different licks are very important. Listen for instance at bar 32 which leads into the pre-chorus. And also for instance the rest in bar 39 in the first beat.

Please mind that Mike Porcaro doesn’t use these rests in the main groove anymore after the bridge. Almost everywhere in the main groove he doesn’t use these rests anymore. These are subtle details, but I’ve mentioned it before: I think these details really make the difference between a regular bassline and one done by a professional like Mike Porcaro.

And of course there’s this really fantastic lick in the bridge! Lots of syncopation and 16th notes here!

Although Mike really sticks to the basics and he allowed himself to do a little variation in the main groove at the very end of the song. Listen to the octaves in bar 110 and 112.
