So, yeah everything we were taught about the history of thanksgiving is wrong. It's just made up. Luckily, the actual history of thanksgiving is more interesting (at least in my opinion). Our Thanksgiving came about as a direct result of the campaigning done by Sarah Hale, the editor of Godey's Lady's Book. She utilized her massive subscriber base to push to have Thanksgiving made into a public national holiday, and she was successful!

Additionally, while we might want to think that Black Friday shopping is representative of our late-stage capitalistic nightmare (and parts of it are, don't get me wrong), the reality is that after thanksgiving shopping has always been connected to the thanksgiving holiday! Same goes for football! Now, how we started calling it Black Friday, is a fun little side story...
