Penn DOC Goal 1: Prevention.
The number one goal of the Penn Dermatology Oncology Center is to counsel patients that prevention is by far the most important aspect of care. The best way to prevent skin cancer is by wearing proper sunscreen with an SPF of 30 that blocks UVA and UVB.

Penn DOC Goal 2: Cure.
For patients who come to see the Penn Dermatology Oncology Center for skin cancer, the top priority is to cure the skin cancer. The Penn dermatology oncologic surgery unit has cutting edge abilities to care for patients who have the most challenging skin cancers in some of the most difficult locations. But once the cancer is out, the appearance must be restored which is done with meticulous surgical techniques, leading us to the Penn Dermatology Oncology Center’s next goal:

Penn DOC Goal 3: Restore.
Facial scars have a negative impact on conversation, but this effect can be minimized with meticulous reconstruction. Cancers on the mid-face and patients who have had reconstructions that perhaps have a suboptimal outcome can be fixed. The Penn Dermatology and Oncology Center works to reassure patients that if they do have a skin cancer they will do their best to get them back to the point where it is minimally visible.

Penn DOC Goal 4: Recognize.
The Penn Dermatology Oncology Center’s last goal for improving the patient experience and outcomes is to recognize the importance of skin cancer. Most people know about cancer and melanoma, but out of the 303 million skin cancers, only about 100,000-150,000 of them are melanomas. The others are non-melanoma skin cancers that most people don’t think are a big deal and in fact they are. These skin cancers have a huge impact on the quality of life. Quality of life is a multifactor construct where the social interactions that you have and the emotions that you have and your appearance all play a role. With the treatments that the Penn Dermatology Oncology Center has, they have demonstrated statistically significant improvements in quality of life when taking out skin cancer and reconstructing. This gives the Penn Dermatology Oncology Center the ability to offer precision care for patients in not just skin cancer, but cosmetic concerns as well.
