Saint Symphorian, son of the noble Christian Faustus, was martyred in Autun, Gaul, during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Baptized by St. Benignus, he grew in faith, modesty, and charity. Refusing to worship the pagan goddess Cybele during a public procession, he was arrested and brought before Governor Heraclius. Despite offers of wealth and military honor, Symphorian boldly rejected idolatry and professed his faith in the one true God. After enduring beatings and imprisonment, he was condemned to death by the sword. As he was led to execution, his mother encouraged him to remain steadfast, reminding him of eternal life. His tomb later became a site of miracles, and a church was built in his honor in the 5th century.
