Mrs Thatcher - No No No to an Un-Democratic European Union

Mrs Thatcher returned from a meeting of European Leaders in Rome in late October 1990 and addressed the House of Commons on October 30th.

Having campaigned to join the Common Market in the 1970s, she had slowly come to the realisation that the structure of the proposed European Union was not going to be established on a democratic basis.

The toothless European Parliament was to be the only element of sham-democracy and the Unelected European Commission was to be all powerful.

This speech made her complete opposition to this blue-print clear to all.

In response, Europhiles in her own party overthrew her. Less than 30 days later she was out of office.

Her successor, John Major, forced the Maastricht Treaty through Parliament by forcing his own MPs to vote for it as a confidence vote in their own Government - a treachorous move that many feel deeply bitter about to this day.

The Maastricht Treaty formed the European Union on the basis that Margaret Thatcher had been so deeply opposed to.

As many have observed since, it was the beginning of the European Union and also the beginning of the UK's departure from that Union.

It was only a matter of time before a nation with long democratic traditions and a long history of success built on democratic foundations would reject involvement in a un-democratic European Union.

A direct line can be drawn from this speech to the result of the EU Referendum in June 2016 - when the British people, by a majority of over 1.25 million votes, decided to leave the EU a little over 25 years later.
