In 2014, Mutaz Essa Barshim and Bogdan Bondarenko engaged in one of the most enthralling high jump battles in history, swapping blows throughout the season in their bid to claim the Diamond Trophy.

By the time the final in Brussels came around, the two remained neck and neck, and the stage was set for a groundbreaking competition.

While Bondarenko sailed to 2.40m without problem, Barshim nearly stumbled at 2.37m, before rallying and jumping 2.40m himself at the first attempt. What followed was a moment of athletics history, as the Qatari cleared 2.43m to take victory, the IAAF Diamond League title and move his PB to within two centimetres of Javier Sotomayor's world record.
