MATERIALS:
 2 balloons
 Plastic bottle with a hole
 Plastic bottle with no hole

PROCEDURES:
1. Put the insides of the balloon into a plastic bottle with no hole. Expand the mouth of the
balloon and wrap it around the mouth of the plastic bottle.
2. Blow the balloon with all your force. Try doing it three times.
3. Make observations.
4. Put the other balloon into a plastic bottle with a hole this time. Expand again the mouth of the
balloon and wrap it around the mouth of the plastic bottle.
5. Blow the balloon with all your force. Do it thrice.
6. Now, make observations.
7. Blow the balloon in a plastic bottle with a hole once again but cover the hole this time.
8. Again, blow the balloon without covering the hole but before detaching your mouth from the
balloon, cover the hole, and then, detach your mouth. See what happens?

QUESTIONS:
1. What happen when you blow the balloon in a plastic bottle with no hole? How about the
balloon with a hole on the bottom part?
2. How does the hole affect the expansion of the balloon?
3. What happen when you blow the balloon, then, cover hole before detaching your mouth on
it?
4. Is atmospheric pressure having something to do with the experiment?

EXPLANATION:
Air inside the bottle is matter and takes up space. It can be heard on the second bottle that air
is moving. How come it’s moving when in fact, air takes up all the space inside the bottle which
prevents the balloon from expanding? It is because the hole in the bottles. As you blow, the air
allows the balloon to push the air (in the bottle) outside of the bottle through the hole. Thus, there is
no air trapped inside the bottle and can escape outside of the bottle. When you put a finger over the hole after blowing, the balloon stay blown even if you already detached your mouth from the
balloon and the bottle. It is because the high pressure in the balloon pushes outward harder than the
low pressure air in the bottle.
