*Many people have expressed concern about the lack of a tail fan in this reconstruction. If you noticed, good eye! It's obvious you know your dinosaurs. Most raptors discovered with feathers thus far do show tail ornamentation. However not all feathered dinosaurs had tail fans, for instance Sinosauropteryx prima (admittedly, more distantly related than troodontids or fellow dromaeosaurs). It is because of this evidence of variation in feather arrangement and my own aesthetic taste that I made the speculative choice to go with simple filaments on the tail of this reconstruction.

The makers of 2015's Jurassic World made a conscious decision not to update the film’s dinosaurs to reflect current research. In this video, expert dinosaur artist Josh Cotton tries to answer the question: what might the Velociraptor have looked like if Hollywood hadn’t been too chicken to give it feathers?
