Today marks exactly one month after the devastating fire that roared through Lahaina on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. In memory of that heartbreaking day I wanted to post this video comparing drone footage shot on June 27, 2020 versus August 15, 2023 of the homes and businesses from the Lahaina Bypass down through Lahainaluna Road and to historic Lahaina Harbor and Front Street.

Lahaina was devastated by a horrible fire on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. A strong hurricane traveling approximately 500 miles south of Maui caused extremely strong winds of 60 miles per hour with gusts up to 80 miles per hour in some areas. Several fires broke out throughout Maui including Lahaina (by the bypass and Lahainaluna Road), Kula, and Kihei. The fire in Lahaina spread quickly with the winds and the firefighters were helpless. Sadly many lives, homes, businesses, and history were wiped out in a matter of hours. The cause of the fires is under investigation but it is widely believed that they started by power lines and poles being knocked down by the strong winds. Hawaiian Electric failed to shut off power to the lines.
