A reflection on the Prodigal Son from Luke chapter 15

It’s a story about mercy
about unconditional love
and compassion and forgiveness and grace
the Prodigal son, the lost son
and he certainly was lost
he had everything
wealth, security
and most of all the love of his father
and he gave it all away
or so he thought
leaving home
going to a far country
squandering everything
surviving a devastating famine
feeding the pigs
rock bottom
he could sink no further
and then words that speak to us over the centuries
across the generations
‘he came to himself’
and so he did
what was it?
a memory of being loved?
and held?
he got up
he went home
and he experienced the miracle of his father’s love
are there times we look in the mirror and we ask ourselves…
how did it come to this?
what have I done with my life?
where am I going?
I’ve squandered my inheritance
I’ve wasted my opportunities
I could have done something different
I could have been a better person
I should have tried harder
and God says,
it’s okay
nothing is wasted
I love you beyond measure
come back home
don’t be afraid
come home
and know this
even before you begin to walk towards me
I’ll come running to you
