This week we had a question from one of our customers asking if their furniture would be covered while it was being moved from their old house to their new house. Great question!
The short answer is yes but let me explain because there are three things you need to know.

First, most standard homeowners insurance policies in Melbourne, Florida typically cover your personal property while it’s anywhere in the world. However, the insurance company generally has a provision that limits coverage to 10% of your personal property coverage which is typically listed as coverage C on your homeowners declarations page. So if you have $100,000 in Personal property coverage on your policy – you’ll generally have only $10,000 to covers you personal property during the move.

Second, your deductible will apply. Most homeowners policies in Melbourne, Florida have an All Other Perils deductible at $1000. This means that your losses must exceed $1000 before you coverage kicks in.

Lastly, and most importantly, standard homeowners insurance in Melbourne, Florida typically cover personal property on a named peril basis. This means that the policy only covers personal property losses if the loss is caused by perils listed in your policy. Not included in this list are losses from shifting items, losses from poorly secured items, or losses from moving company neglect.

So what should you do – if you comfortable with your deductible, the 10% limit of coverage and the named perils that are in your policy, then you should be good to go with your current home owners insurance policy. If you prefer, extensive and exhaustive coverage, which will typically come with a lower deductible as well, then you should look to secure moving insurance and your moving company should be able to help.
