What does "millimeter of rainfall" mean? How is rainfall measured?

To measure rainfall, a tube-shaped cylinder is used, called a rain gauge or precipitation meter. This is placed in an open area where there are no trees, walls, or obstacles to block the rain.

When it rains, water is collected in this cylinder.
Once the rain stops, the scale marked in millimeters on the cylinder shows how many millimeters of rain has fallen.

For example:
100 mm of rainfall means that in one square meter, 100 liters of water has been poured down.

So, the more millimeters shown, the more rainfall occurred in that area.
