"Those are typical products that we get here. For example this item is a knee but just one part as you see here how it looks as a complete knee moving up and down. We find lots of these parts over here. Sometimes those parts are attached but not always. This material is cobalt chromium. Here we have also a hip made also from cobalt chromium. Let me see we also have lots of prosthetic dental plates."

"At the very beginning we realised that the material that we are dealing with is in a grey area, it is free to use, however families know that their deceased loved one has a prosthetic hip or knee. If we would have started this business only on a commercial basis we would become very rich when you see how much metal we get from crematories, but that was not our purpose. We wanted to do this business in this way (as a charity) and to have lots pleasure out of it."

"Luckily prosthetics are made out of fine and valuable metals - so called non-fero metals like cobalt chromium - and after being melted and processed that metal finds its use a lot in the airplane industry. Many parts of airplane turbines are made of cobalt chromium. Titanium is used quite a lot in house equipment."

LEADIN:
Increasing numbers of crematoria in Europe are sending prosthetic body parts taken from cremated bodies as scrap for recycling.
Currently one Dutch recycling company collects 200 tons of metal from 450 crematoria in 15 European countries at no charge.
STORYLINE:
If recycling your loved one's replacement parts seems to be a grisly business, it is in fact a boon for funeral homes and for the environment.
This recycling warehouse in Zwolle in the Netherlands looks unremarkable. Workers sift through dusty containers of screws, rods and iron balls and sort them for processing.
Gabriels had given an 84-year-old patient a new hip just a few weeks before she died.
