STORYLINE:

The U.S. commander of the military campaign in Afghanistan visited Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, on Thursday as part of his trip to Central Asia.

General Tommy Franks went to Tajikistan to thank President Emomali Rakhmonov for the impoverished ex-Soviet republic's support for the war on terror.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting with Rakhmonov, Franks said that American military in coordination with Afghans continues to look for terrorists.

Afghanistan's interim leader, Hamid Karzai, also arrived in Dushanbe Thursday evening.

It was unclear whether Franks and Karzai would meet, as had previously been expected.

Karzai also met the Tajik president to discuss further cooperation between two countries and the situation in the region.

After the talks both leaders signed a friendship and cooperation agreement between Afghanistan and Tajikistan.
