Three people have died and a further 15 were injured after the popular Spanish holiday island of Tenerife was battered by rough seas.

One man reportedly fell into the water north of the island, and was airlifted to hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

Elsewhere, a man was pronounced dead after being found floating in the water south of the island, and a woman reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack after being swept into the ocean along with 10 other people at Puerto de la Cruz.

Local officials have warned tourists and residents alike to stay away from coastal paths and to not take pictures or videos of the wild swells. Turbulent weather in the region is expected to worsen over the coming days.
