Executive functioning is talked about a lot as different in Neurodivergent young people — but can be hard recognise and identify in a practical sense.



In this video, I answer a question left by a Patreon member during one of my twice-monthly live Q&As:



“Can you give me an easy way to understand executive functioning?”



I use a simple, play-along activity I regularly use when training:

As we go, I draw on the Russell Barkley model of executive functioning (including completely forgetting his name and struggling to remember it for some time……but kept it in as like to give you the full flavour of the lives and won’t pretend it doesn’t happen sometimes), using a piece of chocolate to demonstrate key executive functioning skills — live, in real time.



Executive functioning differences are common in neurodivergent people (including autistic, ADHD and PDA profiles).

Understanding how executive functioning works — and how it can be harder under pressure — is essential if we want to understand behaviour with more compassion and accuracy.
