Do people with spinal cord injury (SCI) have specific needs re: cardiovascular health that primary care doctors should know about? In a word, yes!

People with SCI are more at risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) than the general population. This is largely because of:
• Fewer opportunities for physical activity.
• Loss of trunk control and muscle mass can result in greater central adiposity (i.e., more fat around your middle).
• Mismatching caloric intake with caloric expenditure.
• Impaired sensation may make it harder to detect early, more minor cardiac events.

By watching this video in the series, you should be able to:
• Determine when patients with SCI require a referral to a cardiologist, physiatrist, nutritionist, or exercise specialist.

Referring your patient with SCI (and where) should occur if:
After working with your patient for over 1 year, if they still have 3 or more risk factors associated with Cardiovascular disease, including heightened triglycerides, large values of fasting blood glucose, and a larger than normal waist circumference – Refer to Cardiologist
After working with your patient for some time, they seem to have the most difficulty with limiting their caloric intake (meeting SCI-specific guidelines) and finding/preparing heart healthy food - Refer to a Dietician/Nutritionist
After working with your patient for some time, they are still having difficulty meeting exercise guidelines, doing cardiovascular exercise that effectively raises their heart rate, and/or finding places to exercise where the equipment is adapted enough for them to use - Refer to an Exercise or Rehab professional
