A chaconne is a composition which follows a short, repeated chordal pattern over which different variations are played, usually in a slow triple meter. While this piece could technically be regarded as a chaconne by these standards, the name is more tongue-in-cheek. The piece is played by the Transient Canvas duo, a bass clarinet and a marimba, which were difficult to write for. I decided to fill out this instrumentation with two sets of synths, a higher and a lower synth. The lower synth begins a simple chord progression, which sets up the “chaconne”; however, the higher synths enter with dissonant chord extensions, eventually accelerating as the time signature shrinks later in the piece, overlapping in varying patterns, until the higher synth remains by itself, creating a new “chaconne” as it enters back into 6/8.

I decided I wanted to create a piece that felt like a storm; first, you will hear the low swells of the bass clarinet, accompanied only by low bass synths, like a brewing storm; next, the marimba joins in and accompanies the bass clarinet as it breaks out into its higher range, like swirling winds; then, the marimba begins to play an ostinato like falling rain droplets, as a higher synth enters and the time signatures begin to shift (although the bass part of the synths remain in the old tempo and time signature); finally, the piece reaches a climax that sounds like a torrential downpour, followed by a quiet section, where the synths are meant to sound like sunbeams streaming in, as the last few droplets sneak past.
