Digital interactions with our favorite brands and businesses are facilitated via two popular routes: By visiting their website or by downloading their mobile app onto a device.

Did you know that there is a third option as well? One that lets you ‘download’ a website onto your mobile device and use it like a mobile app. They are called Progressive Mobile Apps or PWAs.

PWAs are available for Android, iOS and Windows devices and can be setup in a few easy steps. A PWA appears on your device's homescreen in the form of an icon, which when clicked, launches a particular website in an app-like form. This let’s users quickly access websites without having to navigate their web browsers.
PWAs are suitable access points for frequently visited websites which do not have a native mobile app available. They are also a great alternative to downloading mobile apps, especially for temporary or infrequent needs where you’d rather avoid downloading a mobile app and granting it access to your personal data like location history, storage, media and contacts. Utilities like a shared expenses tracker or a travel planner, which are used only when travelling for example, can be used in their PWA form instead of downloading, and later uninstalling them every time you use them.

Key Features of PWAs are:
Fast loading and works offline (With limited functionalities)
Can be launched from the homescreen and can receive push notifications (Push notifications available on Android only)
Do not access private and personal data like most mobile apps do and do not take up storage space on your device (Only caches some data to support fast loading and offline functionality)

How to add a PWA on Android:
1. Open Google Chrome & open the website which you want to add as a PWA
2. Click the "Settings" button on the top right corner and select 'Add to Home screen'
3. Name the 'App' as suitable and click 'Add'
4. On the next tab, click 'Add Automatically'
5. The PWA/Website Shortcut will be added to your homescreen.
