Bangalore Film Society in collaboration with Christ University, Gandhi Bhavan, Bangalore, Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy, Finger Lake Environmental Film festival (FLEFF) and a consortium of partner organisations, are proud to present the 10th edition of Voices from the Waters-2016.
It is a non-profit International Travelling film festival to raise water-awareness among the public through art and cinema. There is no entry fee for film submissions and admission to the festival is free on first come first serve basis.
These are times when we are witnessing deepening inequities when it comes to the control, distribution and sharing of water; a basic source of life, livelihood and lifevisions. The urban over the agricultural, the privileged over the marginalised, divided political affiliations and loyalties and many other fault lines have intensified the water wars that are predicted to break out with increased frequency in the coming decades. Memories of the recent violence over the unresolved issue of sharing the Cauvery river waters between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, are still fresh. However local the issue may seem at present, the issue of water has been and will be of global significance and heated debates. Debates revolving around the first world over the third world, between ethnic communities, rights of indigenous people, rights of those who seek development, of basic human rights, of environmental rights and the rights of future generations.
The festival has sought to offer a glimpse of the hopes, despair, and the success stories of those who are carrying on a relentless struggle for access to water as a basic need. The stories revolve around water scarcity, dams and displacement, water harvesting/conservation, water struggles and conflicts, floods and droughts, global warming and climate change, degradation of oceans, impact of deforestation on water-bodies, river pollution, the holistic revival of water bodies and many other interesting and insightful, even poetic takes on water and life. Issues have been varied and sometimes similar across regions, ethnicities, countries and more.
With the 10th Edition of the Voices from the Water, we hope to draw the attention of the people in Bangalore, to the pertinent issues on water across the world.
The documentaries and films shown over the years have received accolades from various film festivals and awards across the world.
