Northern California is not just about the San Francisco Bay Area. There are another 400 miles of coastline to the Oregon border, and its northern half is called the Lost Coast. This wild and rugged region is a well-kept secret I had long wanted to explore.

In September 2021, I spent three days on the Lost Coast, immediately captivated by its beauty. I started my trip in the charming town of Eureka, home to historic Victorian buildings and a working waterfront. I also visited the iconic Carson Mansion, a stunning example of Victorian architecture.

From Eureka, I headed to the Lost Coast proper. I hiked along the rugged coastline, where I was rewarded with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. I also explored the area's redwood forests, including the Sky Walk and the Avenue of the Giants.

One of my favorite experiences in the Lost Coast was taking a cruise aboard the Madaket, California's oldest operating passenger boat. The Madaket sails along the coast, providing stunning views of the cliffs, beaches, and forests. I also enjoyed an adult beverage from the smallest licensed bar in the state.

Of course, no trip to the Lost Coast would be complete without sampling the local cannabis. I didn't partake myself, but I did visit a local farmer's market where it was on display. This gave me a unique glimpse into the culture of the area.

My three days on the Lost Coast were an amazing adventure. I saw some of the most beautiful scenery in California and experienced the region's unique culture. I highly recommend visiting the Lost Coast if you're looking for a truly unforgettable vacation.
