Ethan's team is based on the special Pokemon obtainable on the journey through HeartGold and SoulSilver (starter Pokemon, Red Gyarados, Sudowoodo, ExtremeSpeed Dratini, Eevee from Bill and Togepi from Professor Elm). Leaf's team is based on her manga counterpart's team, as she never appears as an NPC in the games and thus has no canonical in-game team.
