Spring Blot Sacrifice | Norse Paganism in Sweden

Описание к видео Spring Blot Sacrifice | Norse Paganism in Sweden

Every year hundreds of pagans gather in the historical site of Old Uppsala in Sweden, to perform a spring blot sacrifice. This year I decided to participate in this ritual that has its roots in the Viking and pre-Viking age.

In 1070 AD the German chronicler Adam of Bremen visited Uppsala to witness the blot sacrifice. He described it in all its gory details - and it's a very different ritual compared to the modern blot that's performed in Uppsala. But even if the actual sacrifice is quite different, it's still an event that honors the Old Norse gods and goddesses.

Historically, the spring blot was dedicated to the gods Odin, Thor and Frej, but there were many other blots throughout the year. Yule blot, Disablot, Midsummer blot, harvest blot, and Alvablot, for example. They were all dedicated to different gods and powers, or even the elves and other supernatural beings. The blot at Uppsala today is dedicated to all gods and all powers - it's inspired by the Old Norse traditions, but it's a modern take on it.

Forn Sed is the religious community behind these rituals. The name means Ancient Customs in Swedish, and it's a community with more than 600 members that focuses on spirituality and acceptance. Everyone is welcome at this blot sacrifice - and at other events throughout the year.
