New research by Cawthron's Dr Hannah Greenhough confirms juvenile green-lipped mussels can typically survive short marine heatwaves, but when harmful algal blooms (HABs) are added to the mix, the impacts are serious.


Her paper shows that:

🌡️ Short-term heatwaves (22 °C) alone did not reduce spat survival.

🌿 Exposure to Alexandrium pacificum cut survival, slowed growth and weakened byssal attachment.

🔄 The combination of HABs + heatwaves caused the sharpest decline, with survival dropping to ~59%.

These findings highlight the importance of multi-stressor research to understand real-world challenges for aquaculture, and underscore the value of early HAB detection and management strategies for spat supply.
