Описание к видео Giacomo Insanguine & Michael Haydn: Keyboard Pieces

Giacomo Insanguine was born in Puglia, in the “Kingdom of Naples”, Italy. When he was eleven years old, he entered the “Conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo”, studying there until the year that institution was closed (1743). He then began studies at the Conservatorio di Sant’ Onofrio, where one of his teachers was the famous Francesco Durante. In 1767, he himself became a professor at that same school. Insanguine was an opera composer. Since he also played the keyboard well (organ, harpsichord), it is no wonder that he wrote a piece such as this “Toccata” (which was the only keyboard piece of his I was able to find). In 1781, he became organist at the Cathedral in Naples, though he continued teaching at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio until his death in 1795.
Michael Haydn was the younger brother of the much-more-famous Joseph Haydn. When Michael was twelve, he went to Vienna to join his brother Joseph, who was singing in the choir of Saint Stephen’s Cathedral. Michael was a very skilled student, so much so that he was soon serving as a substitute organist and was comprising pieces of his own. In 1762, he became Concert Master in Salzburg, and held that position for forty-four years. There, he created more than 360 compositions for the church, and also instrumental pieces. Joseph Haydn loved his brother’s sacred works, and even considered them to be superior to his own. The series of little pieces you will hear in this recording are “versets”, i.e., shorts interludes for the organ (here, they are played with the sound of a “claviorgan”, which is a combination organ and harpsichord, this instrument being in use from the 16th through the 18th centuries.)
