Mizoram has joined the list of Northeastern states with direct rail connectivity to its capital, following the completion of the 51.38-km broad-gauge line from Bairabi to Sairang. The project, built at a cost of ₹8,071 crore, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sairang station, just 20 km from Aizawl, will serve as the main railhead for the capital. The route includes 48 tunnels, 142 bridges, and the world’s second-tallest pier bridge—Bridge No. 144 over the Kurung River, rising 114 metres. The line passes through Kolasib and Aizawl districts, with stops at Hortoki, Kawnpui, and Mualkhang. This is part of Indian Railways’ plan to connect all Northeast state capitals by 2029. The Bairabi–Sairang line is a 51 kilometres (32 mi) long railway line from Bairabi to Sairang under the Northeast Frontier Railway zone of Indian Railways. The cost of construction from Bairabi to Sairang is estimated at INR 2384 crores, which was later revised at INR 5021.45 crores. Bairabi-Sairang rail line entails 130 bridges, 23 tunnels and four stations namely Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang, and 28 hectares (69 acres) land was acquired for the construction. The Northeast Frontier Railway has completed the work of construction of the tallest pier in Mizoram in the approach of Sairang railway station, the height of this pier is 104 metres, which is 42 metres taller than the Qutub Minar.
The Bairabi–Sairang Rail Line Project is one of the most ambitious railway projects in Northeast India, connecting Bairabi (Kolasib district) to Sairang (near Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital). Once completed, it will provide Mizoram with its first broad gauge railway connectivity, boosting trade, tourism, and economic growth in the region.
