Day 3 afternoon rewatch/continuation

Prosecutors allege that on March 19, 2024, 14-year-old Carly Gregg shot her mother, Ashley Smylie, 40, twice in the face and once below the chin before inviting a friend over to view the body. Ashley Smylie was a high school Algebra teacher at the same school her daughter attended, Northwest Rankin High School.

According to police, Ashley’s husband, Heath Smylie, arrived home to find his wife on the bedroom floor. Gregg was in the kitchen, where she allegedly fired at him approximately three times, hitting him once in the shoulder. Heath managed to wrestle the gun away from her, after which Gregg reportedly fled through the back door and jumped over a fence before being apprehended about half a mile away.

After the shooting, Gregg allegedly used her mother’s phone to text her stepfather, asking when he would be home, and sent a message to a friend from her own phone, claiming an emergency and asking the friend to come over. When the friend arrived, a detective testified that Gregg asked if she had ever seen a dead body. When the friend said no, Gregg showed her mother’s lifeless body and reportedly told her that she had fired three shots at her mother and had three more prepared for her stepfather: two to the head and one to the chest. The friend then left the house as Gregg waited for Heath to return.

Gregg's attorneys said they are seeking another expert witness to bolster their case that the teenager had prior psychological issues that were compounded when a doctor switched her medications about a week before the shooting.

Carly Gregg, now 15, faces charges of murder and attempted murder and could potentially receive a life sentence after rejecting a plea deal of 40 years. Gregg is being held in solitary confinement at the Rankin County Jail in Brandon until her trial.
