Socialization is an ongoing process. From 4-16 weeks of age is a puppy’s Critical Socialization Period. This means puppies need lots of positive and neutral socialization for new people, places, sights, sounds, surfaces, animals, and experiences.

From 10-12 weeks of age, they likely don’t have full immunity yet from parvovirus so we practice what we coined ‘Safe Socialization’ as part of The VK9 Method of training.

They ride in carts, play in our yards with other dogs, and don’t go down outside of the home except to go potty on field trips. We don’t visit pet stores and never go to dog parks.

I also give puppies their shots myself to avoid vet clinics since sick puppies are in and out of the vet all the time!

Freya and Duke are doing awesome. They are brother and sister, which means we each have a full workload raising them separately but together.

Raising a puppy is fun and it’s easy for us because it’s what we do, but keep in mind it is like a part-time job and timing is everything - for socialization, training, meals, potty breaks, crate training, rewards, and corrections.

Super pleased with these two so far!
