Liam is the only child that doesn’t resemble the signs of a child of alcoholics. The perfect, hero child is Debs, the rebel and scapegoat is Carl, the clown and mascot is Lip, the lost, loner child is Ian, and the caretaker is Fiona. Originally, Sheila Jackson was going to be played by Allison Janney, but the role wasn’t going to be that big in the beginning. Once they realized how expansive the character was going to get, Allison had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with another show that she was part of, Mr. Sunshine. So, Joan Cusack was cast instead.
