Craters of the Moon National Monument 2024

Craters of the Moon National Monument near Arco, Idaho is a vast National Park founded in 1924 that can't be fully explored in one day. Which is why every year after the Idaho Falconers Assoc. Meet I try to see something new every time I go up there.
Craters of the Moon area is 340,000 acre covered in lava fields that covers much of The Great Rift of Idaho and the Snake River Plain. These lava flows go as far back as 15,000 years and as recent as 2,100 years ago. The Shoshone spoke of an giant serpent that lived in the area and got angered by a thunderstorm, coiling around the mountain till it broke with fire, killing the snake.
This expansive, desolate land also holds a unique environment. The dry soil, hot igneous rocks and high winds demand all plants and animals to be tough as nails. Sagebrush, Juniper, and Pine trees are the tallest plants grown. Wildflowers and other low ground plants make this place as home. All animals that live here are high desert dwellers. Lava Tubes make great shelter from the extreme heat and cold weathers that batter this region.
