MATYA:
A unique Newa: Carnival is one of the agro-cultural festivities celebrated in Kathmandu valley. so is at Thecho, Lalitpur. It carries multi-aspects:
1. Secular Celebration in Newar (local ethnic people) style. Offering Bhu: or Bhwe of multiple items in a giant leaf plate to every deity: Chiva or Stupa, monastery, Temple, Pitha or Pingal inside Thecho (ancient Newar dwellings)
2. recreation through street performances in ample attire, props: realia or replica & musical instructions like Dhan, Khin, Dhime, etc..
3. Refreshment from SINA JYA: Newars celebrate rice plantation as the most important farming work. It's believed Newars, farmers go for rice plantation even leaving corpse inside the home. Freeing from month long plantations, celebration in community is amazing.
4. Demonstration of indigenous lifestyle: Ancient life moments, tools, music, etc. are in exhibition in the alleys & squares become the wonderful attraction.
5. Satire, caricature becomes interesting with live performances by locals.
6.Reflection of unique NAKHA :
Offering breakfast, lunch or dinner to kins or blood relations to the senior relatives'
7. Advertisement of local lasses as their growth towards maturity. Their unique dress up and additional same modern get-ups in group catch the eyes of spectators.
8. Competition and cooperation among the musical groups of every alley, tole especially Dhime, a unique Jyapu musical instruments straighten ears.
9.Participation of non -Newars are well entertained.
10. Turn wise organization of MATYA:
After COVID-19 , The celebration halted for last three years is under preparation to grand carnival.
Manka Khala, a unique Newa Organization of Kwe Lachhi (lower part of Temple square) of Thecho, Lalitpur in Nepal has hosted the program on 2 September 2023.
