How Politicians Solve a Problem by Creating New Ones

As housing prices continue to climb ever higher, we realize that owning a home in this lifetime may become nothing but a beautiful illusion. Watching rents rise year after year, we fear we might be forced to leave this city next year. Housing prices have become a mountain we can no longer climb, yet this peak continues to grow.

Mamdani Raised His Scimitar
New York mayoral candidate Zohran Kwame Mamdani (born October 18, 1991) understands the issues that matter most to New York voters. He knows that winning the election hinges on convincing voters he can change everything. Economics are both commonplace and complex - troublesome to explain and difficult to resolve. They pale in comparison to the allure of a simple political slogan.

The Essence of Economics is Scarcity
If we could peer through history with the perspective of the future, we would see that Mamdani, like many demagogic politicians, has only one utility: to motivate us to learn a basic understanding of economics.

If resources were not scarce in this world, economic problems would simply not exist - and Mamdani wouldn't need to brandish his scimitar while blowing bubbles at voters. I dream of residing in New York's pinnacle of luxury living, Rockefeller Plaza, or relocating to the Four Seasons Private Residences New York, Downtown. Yet, alas, such spaces are exceedingly scarce. They can accommodate merely hundreds of households, while those sharing my aspirations number far more than thousands upon thousands.

Who Makes Us Pay Higher Costs
Since resources are finite, not everyone who desires them can be satisfied simultaneously. Because acquiring and holding resources incurs costs, those who can utilize resources most efficiently ultimately gain ownership of them. This is the function of the free market. The market economy prevents resource misallocation, ensuring resources are deployed most efficiently, thereby enhancing the overall well-being of humanity. Two individuals most clearly demonstrated this theory: Frank Hyneman Knight (November 7, 1885 - April 15, 1972) and Ronald Harry Coase (December 29, 1910 - September 2, 2013). For detailed analysis, please refer to "Theory of Relativity in Economics - The Coase Theorem Under the Mass Critique"

Capitalism Is Not Equate to a Free Market Economy
The origins of the free market economy are ancient, dating back to the advent of private property. In early market exchanges, your merchant ships or camel caravans could set sail at any time, carrying your goods to the farthest reaches you could reach. You could also bring distant goods back to your homeland. There were no visas, so labor flowed freely. There were no capital controls, so capital moved freely. There were no hearings, so you could do as you pleased on your private land.

To Oppose Oneself
Clearly, institutional costs aren't solely those imposed by government - they also include artificially created costs within communities. In Bellevue, Washington, where I reside, residents similarly endure exorbitant housing costs. The name Bellevue originates from French, meaning "beautiful view." True to its name, the city resembles a garden city. Yet soaring home prices have driven young people away from this rapidly growing area. To support youth, the Bellevue City Council proposed allowing residents to build Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). However, existing homeowners began worrying that an increased population would depress property values and compromise neighborhood safety. In my own community, residents organized votes and submitted protests.

Institutional Costs Decide the Outcome
Nations have become entities carving out their own territories and erecting walls within the free market. Human ingenuity has yet to devise an effective method for dismantling these walls. It appears we will need to live within these walls for a considerable time. Consequently, competition among nations has transformed into a contest of institutional costs. Whose institutional costs are lower, whose market economy thrives, whose resources are utilized most efficiently - that nation will win the future. In my article "How Corruption-Ridden Socialism Triumphed Over Regulatory Capitalism?" I addressed a crucial point: when institutional costs are high, corruption - that universally despised ulcer - paradoxically becomes the lubricant of the market economy. Regrettably, while we detest corruption between individuals, we choose to turn a blind eye to institutional corruption - lobbying groups, in essence, are ulcers parasitizing on institutional corruption. The day this ulcer develops into cancer will mark the death of capitalism. I will explore these issues in depth in a new series.
