(7 May 2018) Government troops fired tear gas on Monday to disperse stone-throwing protesters as the cycle of violence and anti-India demonstrations continued in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
Kashmiri separatists had called for a strike to protest the killing of five civilians in clashes with security forces on Sunday, following the killing of five militants after several hours of fighting in southern Shopian area.
Top Kashmiri separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was detained after he defied his house detention order by the authorities and led a protest march.
Armed police and paramilitary soldiers patrolled across the region and also enforced a security lockdown in old parts of Srinagar, the urban heart of anti-India protests.
Rebels have been fighting Indian rule since 1989, demanding Indian-controlled Kashmir be made part of Pakistan or become an independent country.
