Opening Verse (The Joy): Genesis 21:6

"Sarah said, 'God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.'"

The Story

Exactly as God had promised, at the appointed time, ninety-year-old Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham, who was one hundred years old. Abraham named the boy Isaac, which means "He Laughs," just as God had commanded. Sarah's earlier laughter of doubt was now transformed into pure joy, celebrating the miracle God had performed. However, during the feast to celebrate Isaac, Sarah saw Ishmael, Hagar's teenage son, mocking the child. Fearing for Isaac’s inheritance, she demanded that Abraham send Hagar and Ishmael away forever.

This command was deeply distressing to Abraham, but God told him to listen to Sarah, reaffirming that the covenant would be passed through Isaac. God also promised Abraham that He would watch over Ishmael and make him into a great nation as well. So, Abraham sadly sent Hagar and Ishmael into the desert with only some bread and water. When their water was gone and the boy was near death, Hagar wept in despair, but an angel of God called to her, telling her not to be afraid. God then opened her eyes to a well of water, saving their lives and proving His faithfulness to Ishmael, who would grow up to father his own great nation.

Closing Verse (The Two Nations): Genesis 21:12-13

"But God said to him... 'It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned. I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.'"
