I might have done it…
I might have found a good French whiskey! Ok, maybe not “good”, but I’ll settle for “not bad”. This is the Vrac Whisky Francais, or French Whiskey from the Disitillery Tessendier.
They’re interesting in that they use traditional Charentais Stills, which have a unique design that I don’t think I’ve seen used by any distillery I’ve ever been to. The distillery makes a lot of liqueurs, brandys and rums, but today it’s their whiskey I’m interested in.
This is made with 100% malted barley, so it’s a single malt, distilled in those traditional Charentais stills, and aged first in French oak, before being finished in ex-bourbon casks. It’s three years old, and comes in at 40%ABV and that’s all there is to it, so let’s dive right in to the tasting notes!
Tasting Notes
Nose
It's quite light on the nose, with soft malty notes with orchard fruits, and some light vanilla sweetness
Palate
It's again quite light on the palate, with light grain sweetness, and some strawberry notes, and a little bit of oak and baking spice
Finish
The finish is short and light, which seems to be a theme, with some citrus and malty notes lingering on after a breath
Overall, this is a fairly standard whiskey, but what’s interesting is that I don’t actively dislike it! I think if I’m going to keep on looking for good French whiskey, I might try more whiskeys from the Tessendier distillery!
Let me know in the comments if you have any recommendations for good French whisky!

I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey. I'm always on the hunt for the best whiskey and love making whiskey review videos. My passion is for Irish whiskey, but I'm open to looking for the best Bourbon or the best scotch too!
I'm an Irishman, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying whiskeys from all around the world, from Kentucky bourbon to Japanese single malts. I also love making cocktails, especially whiskey cocktails (or whisky cocktails) and really enjoy taking a classic recipe and adding my own twist to it, or making simple, 3 ingredient cocktails
