Your roof is a key component in making sure your house is properly cared for. When it gets damaged, it can be a tad bit overwhelming trying to find the right contractor to take care of the problem. There often are so many companies and contractors to choose from, and new postings pop up all the time. It’s always important to do your research before choosing a contractor to ensure you get the best service all around, including the long-term services. But things don’t have to be a challenge to find the best fit for you and your property. Here are three tips to always keep in mind when you are planning to hire a roofer.

Make sure to check for Liability Insurance-
Did you know that in the state of Texas it is not required for a roofing contractor to have liability insurance? You should always check your state laws and regulations to determine what you need to be on the lookout for when hiring a contractor. Liability insurance is not cheap which means non-reputable or fly-by-night contractors often won’t have liability insurance; Meaning you will be held responsible for anything that happens, which potentially could cost you a bunch of money in damage fees and other reparations.

Always check for references-
There are so many ways to check references these days that there is no reason or excuse not to. References will give you an idea of what to expect when working with your contractor. You should look for previous customer reviews to determine if there are any red flags you should be aware of. Look for things such as how effectively the crew works, how long they typically take, any previous complaints, how they leave the work site after they are done, etc. Three very reputable sources to use to find references are Google, Facebook, and Better Business Bureau. If for some reason you are unable to find any references then that is a BIG red flag and you should probably steer clear of that contractor or at least proceed with caution.

Always use a local company-
With storms comes the possibility of roof damage, especially after hail hits. After a major storm, companies and contractors from neighboring states, and even across the country, tend to come in and offer their services, possibly even with a discount to try and entice you more. But they often won’t be able to properly take care of you, or flat out won’t provide any service at all, after the initial install. By using someone local you can be more sure that you have someone who will check on your roof from time to time after the initial install, and be able to provide other services as time goes by and after any other events that may cause damage to your roof.
