📖 Plot Summary

The story follows nightclub hostess Pat Rogers and her boxer boyfriend Slag Bailey. After their associate Pins Streaver is killed during a robbery attempt, Pat and Slag travel to his country home — where they meet Pins’ 12-year-old son, Ted, who doesn’t yet know his father has died. To comfort the boy, Pat and Slag pretend to be a married couple and agree to care for him.

Over the years, they become devoted foster parents and help raise Ted, who grows up to become a high school and college football star. Trouble arises when a shady boxing promoter tries to lure Ted into professional fighting. Slag objects, leading to conflict between father and son — but Ted soon realizes how much Pat and Slag have sacrificed for him. By the end, Pat and Slag decide to formalize their relationship by getting married.
