See how to remove the lower unit on a Mercury Tracker 40 outboard in this video from Boats.net.
This procedure is necessary if you’re planning to do a couple of jobs. In our case, we’ll be replacing the upper seals and replacing the water pump on this Mercury outboard.

The shift shaft on this unit is in two pieces. We’ll get those separated and then unbolt the unit and get it over onto our stand.

See this diagram for a better look at the lower unit: https://www.boats.net/catalog/mercury...

In the video we’re working with a 2002 Mercury 40 HP 2-stroke outboard motor, but you may have similar steps for your Mercury outboard. If you’re not sure whether these steps apply to your motor, leave a comment and we’ll get back to you.
