Compass Tips - Dividing a line sement into equal segments. Method 2

One way to divide a line into equal segments with only a compass and a straight edge.
Thale's Theorom

Draw a new line starting at the end of the line you want to divide.
Use the compass to make 4 equal segments.
Connect the last mark to the opposite end of the first line.
Use the method for transferring angles (See:    • Compass Tips - Transfer an Angle  ) to create to more lines that are parallel to the line you just drew.
Where those lines intersect with the first line will be the markers that divide your line.
In this case, I divided it in 3 equal segments but you could use the same technique to divide it into any number of segments.
