Narcissus Carlton is one of the oldest Daffodil varieties available on the market, grown by Percival D. Williams and registered before 1927 (so about 100 years ago!!!). It is a historical daffodil variety, belonging to the group 2 of the daffodil classification (large cupped), and still one of the most popular varieties grown in the UK as well as in other countries thanks to its outstanding qualities such as the longevity of the blooms and their resistance to adverse weather. It is quite a tall variety, ideal for the mid-border, with flowers up to 12 cm across, bright yellow (the cup colour is even more intense than the perianth colour), with a very light, sweet and spicy scent, you really need to put your nose very close to the flower in order to smell it. Even if many sources list this variety as very fragrant, this is definitely not much scented in my opinion, however the flower shape and colour are gorgeous.
This variety can be cultivated across the UK as well as in many areas with temperate climate, but also area with quite a cold climate, being hardy between USDA 3 and 8. As usual for daffodils, it loves full sun (but can grow also in partial shade), and the bulbs need to be planted in well drained soil, about 10-15 cm deep. The plant will start sprouting the laves in late autumn-early winter, blooming in late winter - early spring, and then go dormant in late spring-early summer.
