Описание к видео Cryogenic Electron Microscopy of Beam and Air-Sensitive Materials

Presented By:
Daniel Long
John Watt

Speaker Biography:
Dr. Daniel Long is a postdoctoral appointee at Sandia National Laboratories where he is an electron microscopist studying next-generation energy storage with cryo-EM. He uses cryo-EM to vitrify liquid-solid interfaces in battery systems, performs cryo-SEM/EDS, and prepares cryo-TEM lamella in order to image and map their chemistry. He earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from North Carolina State University in May 2019 and he his B.S. in Physics in May 2014 from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include development of cryo-microscopy techniques, next-generation energy materials including Li metal and non-lithium chemistries, and failure analysis.
Dr. John Watt is a Scientist and electron microscopist at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He received his PhD in Chemistry from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and held postdoctoral positions both at VUW and CINT Sandia. His research interests include the synthesis and characterization of soft matter and inorganic materials, investigating their unique interfaces and behaviors using both cryo- and in-situ EM.

Webinar:
Cryogenic Electron Microscopy of Beam and Air-Sensitive Materials

Webinar Abstract:
Advances in cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM), primarily driven by the life sciences, have emerged as powerful techniques for the characterization of beam and air sensitive materials. Cryo-EM avoids the drying artifacts introduced when preparing a sample for the high vacuum environment of an electron microscope, and significantly reduces e- beam damage. Therefore, materials can be imaged as close to their native hydrated (or solvated) state as possible, while avoiding unwanted transformations (e.g., oxidation). In this webinar we will discuss how cryo-EM is being used for the analysis of low-Z metals, biomimetic materials, polymers, nanocomposites, and their liquid-solid interfaces. We will present the workflow and logistics of using the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINTs) cryo-EM lab, in particular focused ion beam (FIB) lift out techniques and the unique challenges involved with performing this method at cryogenic temperatures.
