Hey there, Vampire Diaries enthusiasts! I'm Jager Weatherby with Wetpaint Entertainment, where we've got the hook up on all things TVD. We're taking time out today to respect the thing that started all this TVD hoopla... the books. So, let's take a look at one of the most complex characters in the series, Mr. Klaus himself.
OK, so we know he's "the baddest vampire of all time" — at least on TV. But who is this guy on the page? As you may or may not know, the Vampire Diaries books are significantly different than their on-screen CW counterpart, so get ready to learn a whole new set of rules about beautiful bloodsucker Klaus.
First things first, let's get one thing straight: Book Klaus was NEVER human. Being one of the original vampires, he's been around since before the pyramids were made and lived in various cities around the globe in his thousands of years on the planet. The vamp in the books does have some very important things in common with his on-screen counterpart, however. He's described on the page as very handsome with electric blue eyes and dusty blonde hair... and a little bit moody. That may an understatement. Book Klaus — and from what we've seen, on-screen Klaus — can switch from uber-charming to downright maniacal within minutes. Is it bad that makes him sound even more attractive?
Now, onto the differences. In the books, Klaus himself is the one who turns Katherine into a vampire. During a later book "The Fury," Katherine returns to her maker to get a little, uh, vamp training. Consequently, she becomes uber-powerful. Katherine isn't the only one Klaus takes under his wild wing. He also turns Tyler — Tyler Smallwood in the books — into a werewolf. This guy's got everybody under his control!
Later, in the book "Dark Reunion," Klaus returns to Mystic Falls to wreak havoc. Whodaguessed? He ends up killing one of the gang's friends, and this is when the MF crew discovers the only thing that can weaken Klaus is white ash wood. Also in this book, Klaus coerces Stefan to leave town with him — we've heard that one before — and the two end up in a bitter brawl. Then, out of nowhere, Damon shows up to stake Klaus. Hell to the yeah! But being the bad ass he is, Klaus is barely harmed and turns against Damon, leaving both Salvatore brothers on the brink of death. Thankfully, witchy Bonnie calls out for Elena and — bam! — some glowy and extremely pissed off Civil War soldiers, along with Elena's spirit, show up to carry Klaus off into the woods. And yes, he's crying like a baby the whole damn time.
But here's where the CW series and the book series really are one in the same — Nobody really knows Klaus' whereabouts. Sure, we all want to think those creepy Civil War ghosts did a number on him, but let's be real. This is KLAUS we're talking about, and killing him off would be (almost) as bad as killing off, say, Damon. Devastating thought, no?
So there you have it. While there are some obvious differences between on and off-screen Klaus, one thing remains for sure: This guy is dangerous — and, admittedly, dreamy.
