In this episode of “Excellence at Work,” Youngstown State University associate professor of mathematics, Dr. Alicia Prieto-Langarica, discusses her approach to teaching, and how it led to her receiving the Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching from the Mathematical Association of American in 2017.


The award is presented annually to three faculty members in the U.S.


“It’s really hard to tell them to care about math and care about how to solve this integral if they don’t have a place to go home,” she says.


“I think we need to see students as a whole individual, as a whole human being.”


In addition to the Henry L. Alder award, Prieto-Langarica was a 25 Under 35 MVP in 2017, and was nominated for the Athena Award in 2019.


Among the research she’s currently working on is “Modeling the Long-Term Effects of Thermoregulation on Human Sleep.”


“On average the best temperature to sleep at is about 80 degrees, but that is 80 degrees above your skin,” she says.


“Which is about 64 degrees with a blanket depending on your metabolism.”
