Four Sikh and Panthic organizations—Panch Pardhani Jatha, Dal Khalsa, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), and the Jathedar Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara Committee—have announced their decision to jointly commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Sarbat Khalsa of 1986.
The Sarbat Khalsa of 1986 was convened by Damdami Taksal on 26 January 1986 at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, during a period of intense turmoil. At that time, the global Sikh community and the Khalsa Panth were awaiting clear leadership and decisive action in accordance with Khalsa tradition. The political leadership of the Shiromani Akali Dal had failed to respond effectively to the situation that arose following the June 1984 military attack and the November 1984 Sikh genocide. That leadership was unable to revive or guide the Sikh struggle toward its determined political objectives in the new circumstances that emerged after the 1984 ghallugharas.
As a result of this failure of the Sikh electoral political leadership, a leadership vacuum emerged, making the Sarbat Khalsa of 1986 a historical necessity.
The Sarbat Khalsa held on 26 January 1986 reintroduced the principle of joint leadership and revived the tradition of collective decision-making. It provided direction and hope for the future course of the Sikh struggle.
Now, as 40 years have passed since that historic event, these four organizations have resolved to jointly commemorate the Sarbat Khalsa of 1986. Drawing guidance from its legacy, they also aim to initiate a process toward forming a common platform for the Panthic struggle and re-establish a system of collective decision-making.
In this message, Panth Sewak Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu of Panch Pardhani Jatha has called upon the Sikh masses to participate in the commemorative event, which will be held on 26 January 2026 at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Amritsar.
Bhai Daljit Singh stated that the present situation is marked by deep uncertainty. Major transformations are taking place at both the international level and within the South Asian region. In India, the political landscape has rapidly shifted toward intense centralization of power. At the same time, evolving security doctrines and changing geopolitical realities have created serious apprehensions and unprecedented challenges for the Sikh community and for Punjab. In this context, he emphasized that it has become imperative for the Sikhs to come together on a common platform and to re-establish a credible process of collective decision-making. For these reasons, he underlined the historic importance of the Sarbat Khalsa commemorative event to be held on 26 January 2026 at Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
