Is There Correct Invitation Etiquette?

There are many dos and don'ts when it comes to proper etiquette for wedding invitations. In terms of the invitation itself, it is not proper to refer to gifts in any way on or with a wedding invitation -- do not include registry information or a statement that you do not want gifts. It is also improper to state that the celebration will be adults-only -- the invitees are addressed on the envelope, so simply excluding the names of children should make it clear that they are not invited.

You should also avoid including entree choices on the invitation or response card; it is most proper to have food served French waiter style (a tray is brought around to each table with the two dinner choices for the guests to choose from) instead. If your wedding will be a black-tie affair (traditionally reserved for events after 6 p.m.), the words "Black Tie" may appear as a footnote in the right-hand corner of the reception card or invitation.

When it comes to wording, it is most proper to use traditional spelling on formal invitations; words such as "favor" and "honor" are spelled "favour" and "honour." It is also correct to spell out words and dates that are usually abbreviated, such as "Fourteenth Street" and "the fifth of June, two thousand and eleven."

Some additional invitation dos and don’ts include:
DO word your invitation with "the honour of your presence" if the ceremony will he held at a house of worship.
DO NOT use the term "honour" if the ceremony will take place at a home, club, or hotel -- the proper wording is "the pleasure of your company."
DO include the words "and Guest" when addressing envelopes if you wish to give single guests the option of bringing a date.
DO NOT address your guests with nicknames on your invitation envelopes.
DO write out frequently abbreviated words on your envelopes, just as you would on your invitations.
DO NOT use printed address labels, even if you are inviting hundreds of guests.
