The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), a Central University under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, has a global outlook, and specializes in the study of humanities, with a focus on teaching and researching languages and literatures. Headquartered in Hyderabad, the EFLU has two regional Campuses in Shillong (1973) and Lucknow (1979).

The University, which is at the core of teaching languages and literatures in India, celebrated its Diamond Jubilee a few months ago having grown from strength to strength after its modest beginnings in 1958 as the Central Institute of English (CIE). Adding three foreign languages in 1972, it became the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, fondly called CIEFL. The mandate of the Institution has been "to disseminate knowledge by providing instructional, research, and extension facilities in the teaching of English and foreign languages and literatures in India and to develop critical intercultural understanding of civilizations". In 2007, an Act of Parliament made the CIEFL the English and Foreign Languages University.

The EFLU is one of the five Central Universities in India, and one of two in South India, which have been granted Graded Autonomy in 2018 by the University Grants Commission. The University is now empowered to start new Courses and Programmes, and Departments, Schools, and Centres in disciplines of its existing academic framework, and also hire faculty from the top-500 international institutions. The University has been placed 19th in the India Today Best Government Universities Rankings 2019. An India Today-MDRA Survey 2018, placed the University No. 1 among Government universities for teacher-student ratio. THE WEEK Hansa Research Best University Survey 2019, placed the University 8th in the category of All India Central Multidisciplinary Universities.

Spearheading the efforts that brought these successes to the University are seven Schools with twenty-six Departments under them.

In the last three years, with the initiatives of the Vice Chancellor, the University has started a Finishing School that hones the etiquette and education of the students thus boosting their employability skills. Under the University Social Responsibility (USR) programmes, the EFLU makes its formidable skills and knowledge in teaching languages available to the general public. Students interact with eminent personalities from various fields in Meet a Leading Light (MALL) to be inspired and informed about the larger world and opportunities. Equipped with gymnasia and a Music Club, the University believes in mens sana in corpore sano-a healthy mind in a healthy body.

The University's contributions to society extend beyond the merely academic, and are veritably holistic.
