If your child responds well to clapping and cheering and is still able to stay in the moment with you and get a back and forth going, keep doing you! Nothing I say will apply to all children :)

As a speech therapist, I don’t clap and cheer when a child says a new word.

“But why?!”

Clapping and praising might seem like the natural response, but it can actually disrupt the moment and hinder conversation flow.

Your child may end up imitating the applause instead of the word! 🚫

So, what’s the better approach? Simple—repeat the word your child said with an enthusiastic smile! Here’s why it works:

✅ It keeps the conversation flowing, encouraging more back-and-forth interaction.
✅ Staying engaged in the moment strengthens joint attention with your child.
✅ By repeating the word, you boost the chances of your child saying it again!

And here’s a bonus tip: If your child’s word is a request (like “more,” “milk,” or “up”), repeat it and follow through to demonstrate the power of their words.
